Iran has become a key player in various conflicts in the Middle East North Africa region and beyond. From involving proxy wars, to providing support to Russia in Ukraine, Iran has been pursuing a set of strategies that aim at projecting power, expanding influence, and gaining visibility and relevance in the global strategic calculus. This is driven by the concept of ‘resistance’ in Iranian politics that has been integrated into the country’s strategic decision making. Whilst the concept of resistance can also be adopted to describe social movements, and nonviolence fight of the people for freedom and justice, in Iranian state’s political philosophy, it conveys a different connotation. At the domestic level, it means maintaining the stability of the regime through resisting against any reform, oppressing any uprising, and controlling the people. At the regional level, Iran has been investing heavily in forming a network of allies and proxies to resist against the US and its allies across the region. At the international level, Iran’s effort to circumvent the US-led economic pressure, that is in response to its regional expansion and nuclear aspirations, has formed the core of its resistance. The regime’s economic strategies of resistance also include promoting certain economic sectors and players that can help with the regime’s long-term priority: regime stability. The country' most senior political figure, the Supreme Leader, has promoted and lad such efforts through an ideologically charged discourse that includes the concept of "resistance". State-owned media, and the loyal segments of the political elite in Iran have vigorously propagated this concept and adopted it into the state tangible policies. This seminar will examine integration of the ‘resistance’ concept into state policies in Iran, and will delve into the ideological framework of the Islamic Republic, to provide an in-depth understanding on the country's domestic, regional, and global strategies.
