Some 66 million years ago the impact of a meteorite the size of Mount Everest caused a terrestrial catastrophe of cosmic dimensions. The resulting extinction of the Dinosaurs alongside with other collateral damage brought about is often cited as one of the greatest mass casualties in earth’s history. Today, we urgently worry about human interference in the course of nature, most notably with regard to man-made emissions of carbon dioxide, which have been increasingly ongoing now for almost a century, still a real comparison to what we uncontroversially see as a terrestrial catastrophe of cosmic dimensions has hardly ever been made yet. This seems unfortunate at a time when many important questions seem to be touched, when our concern for the environment and future generations creates division, incites argument and hostility, and very often takes society hostage. Today, public discussion is dominated by politicians, (Hollywood) celebrities, policy consultants, and enraged youngsters. Most lamentably, however, a philosophical discussion is virtually absent. This may be because philosophy is so bad at merely cheering and applauding the powers that are; still it is a lacuna we need to fill.
The seminar is suitable for advanced students of philosophy as well as students of the Master program Politics, Economics, and Philosophy (PEP). Due to the controversial nature of the topic the requirements of civility, intellectual honesty, and tolerance cannot be dispensed with. Students easily offended by exposition to other than their heartfelt views are kindly being asked to take up another class.
