Kommentare/ Inhalte: In this seminar we will read and discuss texts from the twentieth century that address topics relating knowledge, science and society. In particular, we will occupy ourselves with selected chapters from "Measures and Men" (Witold Kula), "The Bee and the Architect" (Marcello Cini et al.), and "Socio-economic Prerequisites for the Emergence of Classical Physics" (Boris Hessen). The readings shall revolve around questions of how knowledge making practices are related to the social and political relations in particular historical contexts. How forms of knowledge and forms of value making were related in history? Histories of standardization in measurement, the relation between practice and abstraction in science, the political economies of institutional science are certain aspects that the readings will navigate. The reading seminar will be held jointly by Senthil Babu (French Institute of Pondicherry, India), Pietro D. Omodeo (Ca' Foscari University of Venice) and Matthias Schemmel (Universität Hamburg). The Studienleistung consists of preparatory reading, active participation, and the writing of an essay (ca. 5 pages) focusing on one of the texts or topics discussed. The selected texts will be uploaded here at the beginning of the term.
