PRESENCE

Comments/contents:
Despite the fundamental belief in the ‘non-existence of the self’ (anatman) throughout different Buddhist schools over time, human life has often been highlighted as pivotal due to its unique chances for awakening. Accordingly, countless stories of the lives of Buddhists have been recorded, amounting to a vast literature depicting the lives of nuns and monks, from prominent abbots or translators to eccentric teachers. Naturally, records of this kind include hagiographic eulogies and portraits of ‘ideal life’, but they also contain travel stories and other records of cross-cultural interaction, as well as personal and historical details, dreams and miraculous tales.
Throughout the seminar, we will read accounts from different times and countries, aiming for a cross section of different genres focusing on the biographic (re-) telling of Buddhist lives. We will look for commonalities, constants, trends, differences and breaks in such narratives; guiding questions might include the motivation and purpose for recording such stories, the socio-historical background of their production, but also the later transmission and use of such biographical descriptions.

Learning objectives:
The course will introduce essential terminology and concepts regarding biographical records in both emic (Buddhist) and etic (Academic) literature. By the end of the seminar, the student will have read and analyzed selected texts characteristic of Buddhist biographical literature (in translation) from various regions and time periods. Students will be able to evaluate and situate selected literature in their socio-historical and religious context, and to identify common characteristics or individual differences of descriptions of Buddhist lives.

Didactic concept:
Credit points: Regular and active participation in the seminar sessions ("courses of choice" area, = 3 CP). In the mandatory BS 1 module, MA Buddhist Studies students are additionally expected to give presentations (= 6 CP) and submit a seminar paper (= another 6 CP).
