Is it possible to provide the ultimate explanation of our world? Can we be sure about what is the right thing to do? Should we renounce to unravel the hard problem of consciousness?

Salomon Maimon, recognized as one of the most significant post-Kantian philosophers, challenges us to question our most ingrained way of understanding ourselves, our relationship with others, and the world around us. However, his scepticism does not aim to destroy, but to deconstruct our common idea of certainty. This seminar invites you to embark on a critical exploration of Maimon’s challenges regarding scientific explanation, ethics, and theory of consciousness.

Active participation is encouraged, whether through presenting brief introductions to the assigned texts or engaging in lively discussions. Materials will be provided in both the original German and English translations, offering participants the possibility to read them in their chosen language.
