The matter of Asylum Law and international Protection is very relevant and discussed in the European Union (EU) current context. For this reason the aim of the course is to provide students with the knowledge of the fundamental legal elements underpinning European legislation on international protection and asylum law.

A brief introduction on the typologies of migrant categories and on the European legislation on international protection will be addressed, the analysis of European and international Conventions valid within the European Union such as the Declaration of Fundamental Rights of Man, the Geneva Convention (1951), the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, and the regulations enacted by the European institutions related the international protection will be object of the course. The European jurisprudence will also be analysed above all to understand what violations of current legislation have been incurred by Member States so far. The vision of a documentary is also provided to help to better understand the analysis of some part of the program (for example related to the legislation on the examination of asylum claims) as also the solution of legal cases and role-playing techniques.

Didactic concept:
the course will be dedicated to the analysis of:
-description of different categories of migrants;
-overview of international maritime law and EU search and rescue operations into the sea;
-analysis of the International Conventions valid in European Union and the European legal tools on International Protection;
-refugee status and specific EU normative;
-subsidiary protection and specific EU normative;
-focus on category of vulnerable persons (for instance unaccompanied migrants and victims of trafficking) and international protection;
-overview on the procedures for the recognition of the international protection (interview techniques and evidence assessment);
-humanitarian protection as national complementary protection in the Member States of EU;
-focus on Dublin III Regulation and the attempt to reform it;
-focus on vulnerable migrants (victims of trafficking; unaccompanied minors, etc.)
-brief comparative analysis on some aspects of two asylum national laws: German Asylum Law and Italian Asylum Law;
-moreover, working group to solve legal cases of European Court of Human Rights and European Court of Justice on the topics object of the course will be organized and role-playing games on the topic will be held (students will be divided into work groups and each group will play the role of one of the actors in the field of asylum procedures).
