Comments/contents: This lecture provides an overview of the foundations and fundamental building blocks of distributed systems, operating systems, data communications and systems security. Topics include basic concepts of concurrency and distribution (processes, synchronization, communication between processes, threads, deadlocks) as well as concurrent access to resources, and concepts and architectural alternatives for communication mechanisms (services and protocols). In the area of systems security the basic concepts of physical security, access control, malware protection are described. Furthermore, the lecture will give an introduction to cryptography and steganography.
Learning objectives: Students will receive an overview about fundamental concepts of distributed systems, operating systems, data communications and systems security, and can judge and compare their applicability and efficiency, and know about their application.
