The U.S. Supreme Court was created by the Constitution to resolve "cases and controversies" that arise in the legal system. But this simple description belies the sweeping role the court plays in determining the interpretation not only of laws, but also of the rights enjoyed by American citizens and residents. The Supreme Court’s actions have decided elections, reshaped political parties, and even helped start a civil war. This class will look at some of the most important decisions in the history of the court, the historical background that led up to them, and the impact those decisions have had on society and politics since then. Along the way, we’ll look at the controversies and changes that have affected the court itself.

Enrollment requirements:

Proof of appropriate language level (minimum B2 for B2 courses, C1 for C1 courses), not older than three years.

This can be achieved by:

Taking our online placement test (link)

Submitting a language certificate from a course at the appropriate level (see website for accepted certificates).

Sending us a copy of the Transcript of Records from STiNE showing completion of a course at the appropriate level.

After sending us the required documents you can then go ahead and register for the respective course(s).

Registrations without proof of the appropriate placement test or certificate will be cancelled.

N.B. If you have already had your level assessed by us in the last three years or have already presented us with a certificate then you do not need to prove your level again.

Learning objectives:
Students should improve their ability in English to: * read and understand high-level descriptions of important milestones in American case law, * discuss the legal, historical, and social themes connected to the cases, and * write summaries that reflect their best understanding of the significance of these cases.
