How are news stories portrayed in different types of media around the world? Why are some stories trending while others are being ignored? We will discuss news as it’s happening and explore how social media has changed the way we produce and consume news. Students will be required to read/watch an article or video and prepare vocabulary exercises each week. Course participants will take part in weekly discussions, prepare a short presentation and a written summary and opinion piece on a trending news item.

Enrollment requirements:

Proof of appropriate language level (minimum B2 for B2 courses, C1 for C1 courses), not older than three years.

This can be achieved by:

Taking our online placement test (link)

Submitting a language certificate from a course at the appropriate level (see website for accepted certificates).

Sending us a copy of the Transcript of Records from STiNE showing completion of a course at the appropriate level.

After sending us the required documents you can then go ahead and register for the respective course(s).

Registrations without proof of the appropriate placement test or certificate will be cancelled.

N.B. If you have already had your level assessed by us in the last three years or have already presented us with a certificate then you do not need to prove your level again.

Learning objectives:
The focus of the course is on discussing current affairs, through class debates and presentations. Students will enhance their vocabulary and their accuracy and fluency in speaking. Course participants will also improve their writing skills by preparing a short summary and an opinion piece. Course material will be based on authentic materialarticles and videos from news sources.
