Qualification goals
The students learn different methods and techniques for the economic evaluation of services or products of the health care market. The methods presented are based both on business cost and performance accounting and on empirical-social science methods of data collection. The methods taught serve as decision support for management decisions in various service areas, e.g. insurance companies when deciding on the reimbursement of new technologies, pharmaceutical companies when launching new drugs on the market or hospitals when purchasing medical technology equipment.
Content
In the module "Health Economic Evaluation", theoretical knowledge on the evaluation of innovations in health care (VL/lecture) is taught as well as the practical application of the learned knowledge (UE/exercise). The module deals in detail with the recording and evaluation of costs, clinical parameters for measuring quality of outcomes and gives an introduction to the measurement of quality of life. In addition, the use of these parameters in the context of cost studies, cost-effectiveness analyses, cost-utility analyses and cost-benefit analyses is taught. The students also gain an insight into the modelling of disease processes with decision trees or within the framework of Markov models and in procedures for risk adjustment when using data from non-randomised studies.

Simultaneous or previous attendance of the module M1a "Methoden der empirischen Forschung" or the module M1b "Advanced Econometrics" is recommended.

Type, prerequisite and language of the (partial) examinations
In order to prepare for the module examination, students are strongly recommended to regularly attend the lectures and exercises and to intensively work through the recommended literature and exercise materials. Unless otherwise announced, the module examination takes the form of a written examination lasting at least 60 minutes in English.

Lecture, exercise and self-study form an inseparable unit and are assessed with a total of 6 credit points.
