Comments/contents: The basic statistics module consists of the courses Statistics 1 (4 SWS) and Statistics 2 (2 SWS). The contents build on each other. The contents (6 SWS) are examined in an exam. The courses run one after the other: first statistics 1 over the first 2/3 of the semester with 6 hours per week (2/3 * 6 = 4), then statistics 2 over the last 1/3 of the semester with 6 hours per week (1/3 * 6 = 2). Please register for Statistics 2 (same time schedule) as well.

Learning objectives: The students

  • can apply basic methods of inductive statistics and transfer them to topics of sociology and economics.
  • are able to use the methods.
  • are able to study the specialist literature independently by developing the terminology and to professionally and critically interpret research results with regard to the methods used and their assumptions.

Didactic concept: In the course, the methods are first motivated by a concrete question and explained by example. The procedure (variables and formulae) is then generalised so that the method can also be applied to other contexts.
The examples tie in with previous knowledge, so that the methods can be partly worked out by the students themselves. Small exercises are also calculated in the lecture. Each lecture starts with repeating the new material covered in the previous course.

In addition, weekly tutorials (2 hours per week) are offered, in which exercises are calculated and discussed.

The course material is made available completely and exclusively on the Internet portal OpenOLAT.

Additional examination information: Module examination in the form of an exam! This means that there is no "individual test" for statistic 1 (as well as for statistic 2). These two subjects are examined together in ONE exam. (Exception old examination regulations)
