Comments/contents:
The seminar aims to provide an overview over the beginnings and contemporary discussions of queer and gender theory with a genuinely intersectional lens. The class will discuss theories and texts that challenge normative understandings of gender, sexuality, power, and knowledge production. The class centers around the thinking of Black, decolonial, queer and trans feminists. Finally, students will be asked to write a 1500 word essay (in English or German) on a topic of their choice, using at least two of the theories discussed in class. In the penultimate session, students will present their ideas to the class in short (3 minute) presentations. The seminar will convey the complexity of the concepts "gender" and "queer" and discuss the geo-temporal contextual differences within the concepts. To do so, students will question the structures of their education and their own knowledge production, and to challenge normative expectations of gender and sexuality.
The literature will be overwhelmingly in English and the seminar itself will be conducted using both English and German. The seminar will be taught online.
