Comments/contents:
The study of law is focused on learning correct norm interpretation. In legal practice, however, fact-finding also plays a central role. In fact-finding, questions of statistics play an increasingly important role in our information or knowledge society. For example, do masks at a demonstration reduce the risk of infection? Do vaccinated doctors and nurses pose a lower risk of infection? What is the significance of a positive rapid antigen test? Even if lawyers do not have to answer these technical questions themselves, they must be able to receive and critically question scientific studies and expert opinions. Therefore, basic statistical methodological skills are an extremely useful key competence in legal practice.
Learning objectives:
This course is designed for students who want to improve their understanding of statistical methods and information and who are interested in gaining an insight into how modern empirical research (including in law) works. The focus of the course is not on mathematical formulae, but on an intuitive understanding of how statistics works and what its limitations are.
Additional examination information:
As the certificate of achievement, a presentation must be given and active participation in the discussions in the course is required.
Absences may not exceed 20 percent of the attendance time.
