Welcome to the course "Seevölkerrecht II"/"International Law of the Sea II".

General information:

This is an advanced course and participants are expected to have basic knowledge of the international law of the sea in line with the learning goals of the course Seevölkerrecht I/International Law of the Sea I. If, for some reason, you could not attend this course or an equivalent course, please consult a textbook or other suitable learning materials in order to familiarize yourself with the subject prior to start of our course.

This course deals with the peaceful settlement of disputes in the international law of the sea, with a focus on the dispute settlement mechanism of Part XV of UNCLOS. It will be taught by myself (Dr. Valentin Schatz) . The course is conceived as an in person lecture and plenty of room for questions and discussion. Please note that this semester, there will be no separate course on the protection of the marine environment.

The venue is Jo 35, Raum 011 (Johnsallee) and the course will begin at 16:15.

Information on Exams

German participants who are enrolled in the regular specialization (Schwerpunktbereich XII: Maritimes Wirtschaftsrecht) will not take a separate exam for this course  but are expected to have full command of the subject in their Schwerpunktbereichsprüfung (which will be conducted in German). Participants who are enrolled in the ERASMUS programme, free movers, and others will take an oral exam (conducted in English) of 15 minutes per participant on the subject of the course. Each examination will be conducted in a group of 2-4 students (i.e. the examination will take between 30 and 60 minutes in total, with 15 minutes allocated to each participant). Those who need to do such an examination are kindly requested to approach me no later than 10 June 2021 so that I can set the dates for the examinations (valentin.schatz@uni-hamburg.de). Thereafter, I  will set the exact dates for the exams.
