Comments/contents:
Digitalization and datafication permeate all areas of society. How can we analyze and evaluate the implications of digitization and the Internet in different social areas? We will consider the structural shifts in the labor market as well as the changes of the public sphere through the Internet and social media. Does digitization strengthen participation of civil society and transparency of politics? Or do fake news and filter bubbles facilitate populism? We will tackle various aspects of state- based and commercial surveillance in Germany and other countries, and the protection of privacy and fundamental rights. Another topic will be data and market power, the infrastructure of platform industries, and economic network effects. Finally, we will discuss governance approaches such as the EU Data Protection Reform, privacy by design and professional ethics.
The seminar takes place in double sessions on Mondays from 2 - 6 pm. Students should be willing to attend a few additional lectures on Wednesday from 6pm to 8pm.

Learning objectives:
The seminar provides theoretical and empirical insights into the relationship between digitalization, society, and politics. It will enable the participants to take part in profound discussions about the preconditions and implications of digital networks, business models as well as technical and legal regulations.

Didactic concept:
The seminar will take place online via video platforms.
The participants will work on the seminar topics through presentations by the lecturer, provided literature and their own research, which they will submit in writing via the video platform. Regular online participation and active collaboration is expected.
