This course is based on the earlier "Foundations of Database Systems" course and deals with current database technology, internal aspects of database management systems as well as advanced database applications like data warehouses and data mining.
Major topics are:
- architecture and components of database management systems
- transaction management
- distributed database and transaction systems
- NoSQL
- data warehouses
- data mining
- probabilistic databases
- similarity search in multimedia data

Learning objectives:
to be able to
- design and develop database and data warehouse applications
- apply mining techniques
- manage large volumes of distributed data by modern software systems
- apply information inquiry techniques in different application areas
- assess database management systems w.r.t. the needs of different application areás
- understand internal database management techniques (e.g. concurrency control, logging and recovery)
- assess (data) mining techniques w.r.t the quality of their results.
