Texts which are preserved in written form (whether on inscriptions or in manuscripts) are certainly not the only sources which have to be taken into account in the study of ancient and medieval Indian history, thought and culture; they are, however, the most important ones.
In order to be able to pursue original research on these written sources, it is not only crucial to learn the respective languages. One also has to become versed in the methodology of dealing with the texts and with the ways in which they are preserved.
Therefore, in this course we will consider the theory and the practice of the historical-philological method. Students will also be introduced to the use of manuscripts in Sanskrit philology.
This course is obligatory for students of the international M.A. program in South Asian studies, study area 1. Other participants are welcome as well.
Additional examination information:
and to registrations in STiNE
-For BA students, registration is mandatory: You must register for the course in STiNE in order to be eligible to participate and take exams.
-The lecturers enter the evaluations/grades in STiNE themselves. Only then are the grades/evaluations visible to students in Leistungskonto/Teilleistungen!
-If you miss a grade/assessment in STiNE or there is an incorrect entry, then you must contact the lecturer(s) and ask for the grade/assessment to be entered.
-If you receive certificates, these do not replace the entry of the grades/assessments by the lecturers STiNE (they must still enter the grades/assessments in STiNE).
-The examination department does not enter any grades in STiNE (exception: external achievements from other universities, which are recognized).
-Only if grades/assessments are entered in STiNE, the examination department can create Transcript of Records (grade sheet) and/or certificates for you.
