Comments/contents:
Strategic management is of great importance to the practices of internationally active companies as well as business administration theory. Exploring the strategic aspects of international management is not only interesting, but also necessary. Long-term survival on the market and the achievement of sustainable competitive advantages are generally not primarily attributable to indicators such as the size or age of a company, but rather to its successful strategies in global competition. The development and implementation of strategies therefore represent central tasks for the management of internationally active companies.

In order to create a broad and comprehensible basis for understanding international strategic management, this lecture will first explain important terms and areas of responsibility within the framework of international corporate management. In addition to the motives for internationalization, selected theoretical approaches to explaining international corporate activity will be discussed. Subsequently, a process model of strategic management in international companies is presented and its essential phases are discussed in detail. Important instruments and decision-making aids of strategic management in international companies will be presented and illustrated by means of concrete practical examples. Further focal points of the lecture are the discussion of viable strategies in global competition, the examination of the influence of digitalization on strategy development and the associated analysis of digital platform strategies, as well as the examination of what responsibility internationally active companies have for sustainable development.

3. Outlook

Learning objectives:
The aim of the lecture is to give students an insight into the research field of international strategic management. They should also be enabled to apply the learned contents to concrete practical problems and to independently analyze strategic decisions of internationally active companies. In addition, the students' sensitivity with regard to the special role of internationally active companies in the context of sustainable development is to be promoted. The students will also recognize the need to deal with the consequences of digitalization for strategy development in companies.

Didactic concept:
The course is divided into lectures and tutorials. The lectures and tutorials are held in German and explain the basic concepts and theories of international strategic management with practical application within the framework of case studies.

For the winter semester 2021/22, the University of Hamburg, and the Chair of Prof. Gilbert, are aiming for teaching in presence. However, since it is not yet possible to say with certainty whether the pandemic dynamics will leave room for face-to-face teaching, we cannot make any final statements at this point. For up-to-date information on the implementation of teaching under pandemic conditions, please read the course description, which you will be able to download below in the course of September (please check for updates of the course description on a regular basis).

From a methodological point of view, PowerPoint slides are used as a framework for discussing the contents of the lecture. The set of slides is provided in German and English and can be downloaded by course participants on STiNE. The slides should be interpreted as a visual "stimulus" and not as a substitute for a lecture manuscript. Students are therefore strongly advised to supplement the slides with their own notes.

The tutorials complement and deepen the lecture content and prepare for the final exam. In addition, they are intended to train essential academic skills. These include the sensitization for strategic and business ethical problems, critical reflection, argumentation skills, the improvement of general text comprehension as well as a more precise understanding of differences between theory and practice.
