The basic statistics module consists of the courses Statistics 1 (4 SWS) and Statistics 2 (2 SWS). The contents build on each other. The contents (6 SWS) are examined in an exam. The courses run one after the other: first statistics 1 over the first 2/3 of the semester with 6 hours per week (2/3 * 6 = 4), then statistics 2 over the last 1/3 of the semester with 6 hours per week (1/3 * 6 = 2). Please register for Statistics 2 (same time schedule) as well.

  •     The role of statistics in the social and economic sciences
  •     Basic concepts and classification of features
  •     Relative and absolute (total) frequency
  •     Measures of location and dispersion
  •     Graphic display options
  •     Joint and conditional frequency distribution
  •     Correlation
  •     Simple linear regression
  •     The concept of probability
  •     Random variables
  •     Special discrete and continuous distributions (including binomial distribution and normal distribution)

Learning objectives: The students

  • can apply basic methods of descriptive statistics and transfer them to topics of sociology and economics.
  • are able to use the methods.
  • understand how probabilities are determined and when they are only approximate.
  • are able to calculate probabilities for random variables.
  • can recognize special distributions and are able to use them.

Additional examination information: Module examination in the form of an exam! This means that there is no "individual test" for statistic 1 (as well as for statistic 2). These two subjects are examined together in ONE exam. (Exception old examination regulations)
