Comments/contents:
This seminar provides an introduction to general concepts and institutions that ground Latin American thinking in International Relations. We cover how Latin American countries relate to each other and the world and how local elites and communities think about themselves and their place in global affairs. For that, we combine historical analysis, addressing the heritages of colonialism and state-building, with theoretical developments and contemporary issues. By mixing lectures with student-led activities, we expect students at the end of the semester to have learned basic concepts and world-perceptions developed in Latin American contexts and apply them to a variety of situations and cases.

Didactic concept:
This course comprises weekly sessions (Thursdays, 16:15-17:45). Classes will be held in English and discussion is highly encouraged. Sections will be partly online and presidential with the possibility of office hours with lectures (Sprechstunde). Some online classes will be synchronic and held through Zoom, while others will be recorded and made available through Stine and Dropbox. Students are expected to read the required literature for each session and to participate in proposed activities.
