The focus of the reading seminar will the book "Modern Control Theories and the Limits of Criminal Justice" published in 2020 by M. Gottfredson and T. Hirschi. The book extend their meanwhile classics "A General Theory of Crime" published in 1990. The authores critically resume the diverse research on their theory (often referred to as "self-control theory") conducted since then and discuss the implications for the policies and practice of the criminal justice system. In the course of the seminar, next to the basic book a selection of studies by other authores will will also be read and discussed.
Learning objectives:
Deeper understanding of theoretical perspectives of criminology; ability to multiple-theory reasoning and discussion.
Didactic concept:
During the seminar we will collectively read and discuss of the book authored by Gottfredson and Hirschi. Additional literature will be included in the course of the seminar. Throughout English language literature will be used. Requirement for participation is basic knowledge of criminological theories as it is provided by the introductory lecture "Criminology". The seminar will take place exclusively via synchronous Zoom meetings.
