Comments/contents:
This course deals with the political orientation of countries evaluated from an economics perspective. We begin with an overview of existing governmental forms also discussing their advantages and disadvantages. Thereafter, we discuss the conditions under which a certain form of government has emerged. We also explore some of the main determinants of democracy and dictatorship. To this end, we discuss aspects such as individual attitudes, history, wealth, religion, health, and education.
Technically, the course applies micro- and macro-tools for analyses. We use international data to evaluate theoretical concepts with real-world developments.
There are exercises for this course. The exercises help to deepen the content of the lecture. Ahead of class, sheets with questions will be made available. Students are asked to work out a solution. We discuss some of the solutions together in ONLINE meetings.
Learning objectives:
The course has three main objectives:
- First, it makes students familiar with a set of issues and questions that are central to the type of governmental form.
- Second, it introduces common micro- and macro-tools for analysis.
- Third, students learn about the difficulties that are involved in changing a certain regime type.
Didactic concept:
Due to the ongoing Corona pandemic, the course is all ONLINE. We meet in a chat room (probably Zoom). Login data will be provided in advance. We try to replicate a regular in-class lecture as closely as possible: the lecturer presents the content and students are asked to participate by asking questions and contributing to a valuable discussion.
Literature:
The teaching-style is mainly paper-based. This means that published research articles will be provided in advance of the lecture. The contents of the articles build the base for our discussions.
