The course offers a panorama of the written cultures (manuscript cultures) of Africa, with a systematic overview of the relevant languages and writings, and basic information on their origin, extension and typologies. Basic problems of the relationships between writing, language and text carriers (manuscripts) as well as cultural and historical contexts and background of the origins of the manuscript cultures will be considered (with a particular accent on the Horn of Africa).
Learning objectives:
The aim is to acquire the basic knowledge about the manuscript cultures of Africa and of the neighbouring areas, along with the basic concepts of codicology, palaeography and text text-criticism ("manuscriptology")
