The course introduces the topic of global and social inequality in the context of migration understood as the connection between migration and settlement, origin and arrival. New analytical dimensions, themes, problem areas and explanatory approaches of inequality in the present are introduced and discussed both through short introductory inputs by the lecturerand through presentations by the students.
Thematically, the course is divided into four modules: 1) Global and Social Inequality: Fundamental Themes and Issues in the Sociology of Inequality, 2) Inequality and Migration, 3) Inequality in the Migration Society, and 4) Migration as Action and Struggles for Equality. The four modules include a total of 27 key themes and concepts that highlight different aspects of the relationship between migration and inequality and are taught, presented, and analyzed through selected texts.
Learning objectives:
Knowledge of the core concepts, most important theoretical and research approaches and scientific discussions in the subject area;
Teaching and practicing skills and methods of independent research on scientific issues, on texts and research findings; teaching and practicing skills of presenting, arguing and discussing scientific content; fostering skills of critical reflection in learning and research. Promoting digital and distance learning skills.
Didactic concept:
The course will be conducted as digital teaching. It is planned to have 4 dates with 6 teaching hours each (45min.) and 2 dates with 2 teaching hours each. The four longer dates are intended for the presentations and will take place in the period May-June, more precise scheduling will follow. The two shorter appointments will be for introductions in the seminar (1st appointment in April 2021) and for discussion of assignments (6th appointment in July 2021), respectively.
All dates will be held via ZOOM. Synchronous teaching will include short inputs from the instructor, student presentations, group discussions. Asynchronous will include ongoing mentoring via email. The asynchronous supervision refers to the preparation of the presentations, as well as to the clarification of organizational issues, as well as to the preparation of the assignments. The selected texts will be made available electronically by the instructor after the beginning of the semester. Students have 3 weeks to decide on a topic for the presentation and another topic for the term paper. Topics are assigned on a "first come, first serve" basis.
Literature:
The list of texts scheduled for close reading and plenary discussions will be announced after the registration deadline. The texts will be provided in electronic form by the instructor.
