This year's Summer University is dedicated to the question of how perceptions of the realities in which we move are constructed.
What factors determine our worldviews? What role do categories such as race or gender play in these processes?
What happens when different realities and truth claims clash and a common basis for discussion seems almost inconceivable?
By looking at different factors that contribute to the construction of life realities and the perception of the world, the Summer University will address the question of why conversations about peace and peacebuilding often already seem to fail due to strongly differing life realities and perspectives on the world. In addition to conveying theoretical foundations, the Summer University also pursues biographical or experience-based learning approaches that are intended to stimulate reflection on one's own realities and their possible (de)construction. These reflections are always related back to the topic of peacebuilding and the question of how the insights gained can be made fruitful for peacebuilding processes and methods.
In addition to the students from the University of Hamburg who will participate in the Summer University, the group of participants also includes students from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, who are studying the master's program "Peace, Trauma, Religion" there.
A few weeks before the Summer University there will be a digital preparation meeting with the whole group. This meeting will serve to get to know each other, but also to introduce the learning objectives and methods of the Summer University, as well as to announce the preparatory literature. The date will be announced in good time by e-mail.
The Summer University is organized by Marle Schuhmann, Friederike Willhoeft, Prof. Dr. Fernando Enns, Dr. Marie Anne Subklew, Dr. Andrés Pacheco Lozano, Sigrid Happ, Natalie Falkenhagen, Louise Hadadi and Eline van der Kaaden. The preparation team is composed of members from different disciplines at the University of Hamburg and the Vrijen Universiteit Amsterdam.
Didactic concept:
The seminar is sponsored by the Gustav Prietsch Foundation. It will take place in presence at the Free University of Amsterdam. The costs for accommodation in a hostel will be covered up to an amount of approximately 200 Euros. Details on hostel accommodation and the exact participation fee will follow.
Participants are expected to agree to participate on site without interruption see below.
Participants of the Peacebuilding Curriculum will be given priority. Remaining places will be decided later.

The following course work is required for successful participation in the Summer University:
- Participation of the digital preparation meeting
- Reading of the preparatory reading (will be announced during the preparatory meeting)
- a written reflection on the SummerUni of 3-5 pages
