Comments/contents:
The social challenges discussed under the term care crisis become particularly visible with the massive changes brought about by the corona pandemic. The previously rather invisible - now framed as 'critical' - infrastructure basically (but not only) refers to un/paid care work, which is still predominantly provided by women. The interaction between the welfare state (parental benefits, education and care services such as daycare centers and schools), the labor market and the family becomes apparent when one of these central institutions is omitted. Existing gender inequalities, as well as successes toward gender equality, become visible. In the seminar we will explore and discuss how care work was and is societal organised before and during the crisis and which inner-family dynamics and gender inequalities can be observed. In the first sessions, we will develop theoretical and empirical foundations on the topic of gender-differentiating care work and then engage in a sociological "nosing around" in individual or group projects on various self chosen sub-themes.
The main part of the seminar will take place in digital form. For the topic and group formation and as a final session, on-site meetings are planned.
