We will meet live several times during the semester (-> Material -> Schedule), this can be digital via zoom or in presence, in which form is specified in the schedule and adjusted if necessary. Please keep the period of the seminar free.

We draw on previous knowledge from the microeconomics and labor economics courses and recommend that you have successfully attended at least one of the two courses.

Learning objectives:
Worldwide over 200 million people live in a country other than where they were born and the number of those willing to migrate is even higher. Who is going where and why? Who is returning? What does migration mean for the country of origin and the country of destination? What are the effects on the labor market? We will examine these questions from an economic point of view in our seminar. On the basis of theoretical considerations and empirical studies, you will learn to analyze the phenomenon of migration economically. The aim is to use the acquired basic knowledge to scientifically question frequently heard claims about the influence of migration.

Didactic concept:
Please note that the didactic concept of this seminar follows a tight schedule. In order to achieve the greatest possible learning success, you should keep to all deadlines. Prepare for each seminar date by reading and reflecting on the material for each date so that you are able to ask questions and participate in discussions.

In the seminar we will first familiarise you with the basic approaches to quantitative economic migration research and practice scientific work, including excerpts (Block 1). You will then apply what you have learned in your short papers (Block 2). After handing in the short papers, you will receive the work of a fellow student on which you will give a short feedback, which we will discuss in small groups (Block 3). Afterwards you will present your revised argumentation (Block 4) and hand in the revised version of your paper together with all other written assignments at the study office after the end of the lecture period.

Literature:
Bansak, C., Simpson, N. & Zavodny, M. (2015): The economics of immigration.

Further literature will be announced in the seminar.

Additional examination information:
