Comments/contents:
In this course, we will look - mainly from a microeconomic perspective - at the labor market and its functioning.
Learning objectives:
The aim is to introduce participants to important theories and empirical findings. At the end of the course, participants will be able to understand the characteristics as well as the social and political conditions of today’s labor market.
Didactic concept:
First, we familiarize with important parameters and discuss the labor market as a specific sub-market within microeconomic theory. We discuss the theoretical foundations of labor supply and demand (how many people work and how many companies employ) and the labor market equilibrium. The course also deals i.e. with unemployment (and its causes), wage formation (who earns how much and for what), and human capital theory.
The course consists of a lecture and a seminar (exercise) part. Lecture and seminar together serve as exam preparation. The course follows the English textbooks by Kaufman/Hotchkiss (KH) and Borjas (B). At some places, the German textbooks by Franz (F) and Sesselmeier/Funk/Waas (SFW) supplement the course material.
The event is offered via online formats in synchronous (e.g. zoom) and asynchronous form (e.g. videos). The first two dates (lecture and tutorial) are both synchronous, where the exact procedure of the course is discussed.
