Comments/contents:
Media use is, in manifold ways, connected to identity construction. Thus the ongoing change of media environments is deeply interwoven with societal and cultural change, with the way how individuals relate themselves to others and manage their everyday lives. In order to understand today’s role of the media, research on audiences, on patterns of media use and on the consequences of these practices becomes increasingly important. Throughout the last years, research has, in the wake of increasingly multicultural societies, dealt intensively with the roles that media play in the negotiation of local, regional, national and supranational identities. This seminar is to, on the one hand, theoretically reflect the relations and connections between media use and identity; on the other hand, several empirical examples are to be investigated more closely: we will discuss studies on the role of media for nation building, for the integration of migrants, and for the development of transcultural communities in general and of European identities and public spheres in particular.

Learning objectives:
A deepened knowledge of the theories and methods of research on media use, media reception and media effects, focusing on processes of intercultural and transcultural communication; furthermore, the seminar is to support the students with finding a topic for their MA thesis.

Didactic concept:
Method:
Intensive reading compendium; close orientation towards up-to-date research; self-organised research/investigation.

Procedures:
The course combines two parts:

a) A general part on theories and methods of research on media use and media effects, which is mainly based on structured input, required readings, and discussion in class.

b) A specialized part on relevant issues related to current changes in media and communication practices and to the areas of migration, diaspora and transcultural communication, which is mainly based on students’ projects and guided by the lecturer. The character of these projects can be rather research or policy oriented.

Obligatory texts as well as a bibliography and other material will be made available on STiNE.

Each student participates in one of the projects, presents it in class, and writes a final report on it – be it a research report or an academic essay. This final report has to be finished until March 6, 2021.

- Platform for synchronous sessions and consultation hours: Zoom
