In this seminar, we will look after the concept of generation from a perspective of social policy and social structure. We will discuss what societal and familial generations are and how the welfare state strives to organise solidarity and justice between generations as well as how it structures the live course. We will further discuss how familial solidarity and conflict in families are structured and how far social policies interfere in this.
Learning objectives:
- Insights in sociological theories of Generations, welfare states and social inequality
- Theoretical approaches to and empirical findings of the analysis of societal generations in the welfare state
- Theoretical approaches to and empirical findings to the analysis of familial generations
- A deepenend knowldedge in scientific work
Didactic concept:
As long as the corona pandemy it enforces the seminar will be held online, which will be a new experience for most of us. We are going to explore the topics by the basic literature provided in the seminar plan. Otherwise than usual you are not required to give presentations because I am not sure yet whether the software available for this is reliable if there are many users at the same time. To organise the seminar we will use OpenOlat, because it is more flexible than Stine. There you will find the literature as well as tasks to do. If you have no OpenOlat account yet, please create one. If you are enrolled to the seminar in Stine and have an OpenOlat account you should automatically have access to the seminar in OpenOlat. If this does not work, which happens in quite a few cases, please send me an email with your OpenOlat account name and email adress. For the seminar online meetings I will give some input per video or powerpoint and will organise have a video chat so we can talk hoping for a reliable connection. We will have online meetings roughly fortnightly as was planned and I hope this suits you. The last meeting I have keept open for additional topics you may wish to be dealt with, reserve and a discussion of prospective term papers.
Literature:
The following literature may serve as general overview. It is not neccessary to read it in advance for the participation in the seminar but you are very welcome to have a look at it. The literature we will deal with in the seminar you will find in the seminar plan.
