Economic sociology deals with economic structures, agents and processes from the perspective and with the methods of sociology. The lecture ‘Introduction to Economic Sociology’ introduces the students into the basic ideas and perspectives of economic sociology. In a first step, some classic texts from sociology with a focus on economy and society will be in the focus. The second part deals with the social, institutional and cultural embeddedness of markets in the ‘new economic sociology’. In a third part, the core institutions of the economic system will be discussed from a sociological perspective. The fourth part of the lecture treats selected areas and empirical findings from the new economic sociology. The lecture contains – in addition to presentations by the lecturer and external guests – several parts of active participation for the students, as well as practical inputs.
Learning objectives:
The lecture enables the students to
- understand basic ideas of economic sociology and the specific sociological perspective on economic processes and structures
- know, classify and evaluate the basic approaches of economic sociology
- deal with original literature; also in the context of other modules
- link theoretical knowledge, empirical results and practical experiences
