Since Classical Tamil Cankam literature became better known in the West through the translations of A.K. Ramanujan, scholars have speculated on the connections between Sanskrit and Tamil poetry. Soon identified as a link was the Prakrit anthology Sattasai, which may have been roughly contemporaneous to Tamil Cankam poetry like the KuRuntokai and also geographically may be placed in the vicinity. The seminar will sum up scholarly efforts at comparison between the two traditions and will then proceed, by minute textual work in both of them, to establish the common conventions (both in the poetry and in the exegetical traditions), images and topoi. Classes are open to students of literary history without the corresponding linguistic background, but of course knowledge in at least one of the languages Sanskrit, Praakrit and Tamil will be welcome.
