Note: The course will be taught in German. Accordingly, the German description is decisive. (To be found on the German version of Stine.) This translation serves only for better comprehensibility for international or non-German speaking students. To be able follow the course, an excellent German language proficiency is required.


Function and development of labour law; legal sources of labour law; relationship between individual labour law and collective labour law; conclusion of employment contracts; concept and definition of term "employee"; rights and obligations under employment contracts; employer's directive powers and rights ("Direktionsrecht"); anti discrimination legislation; fixed term employment relationships; termination of employment relationships by cancellation agreement and by contestation; essentials of employment termination law.

Knowledge of the basics of law ("Grundlagen des Rechts") is required.

In the lecture legislative texts will be used. It is therefore imperative that the latest edition of the so-called "Gesetzessammlung Arbeitsgesetze" (Beck Texte im dtv) be brought into every lecture. This book may also be used for the written exam according to the "Klausurordnung des Fachbereiches Sozialökonomie of 2 July 2014".
Learning objectives:
Students will learn how to assess typical situations arising in the course of business activity with regard to employment law and how to solve them with the appropriate legal instruments. For this purpose, they will get to know the different legal sources of labour law and will learn how to apply them competently in the context of legal case solutions.
