Comments/contents: Texts which are preserved in written form (whether on inscriptions or in manuscripts) are certainly not the only sources which have to be taken into account in the study of ancient and medieval Indian history, thought and culture; they are, however, the most important ones. In order to be able to pursue original research on these written sources, it is not only crucial to learn the respective languages. One also has to become versed in the methodology of dealing with the texts and with the ways in which they are preserved. Therefore, in this course we will consider the theory and the practice of the historical-philological method. Students will also be introduced to the use of manuscripts in Sanskrit philology. This course is obligatory for students of the international M.A. program in South Asian studies, study area 1. Other participants are welcome as well.
