Comments/contents:
Digitalization and datafication permeate all areas of society. How can we analyze and evaluate the implications of digitization and the Internet in different social areas? We will consider the structural shifts in the labor market as well as the changes of the public sphere through the Internet and social media. Does digitization strengthen participation of civil society and transparency of politics? Or do fake news and filter bubbles facilitate populism? We will tackle various aspects of surveillance, the trade-off between freedom and security, and the protection of privacy and fundamental rights. Another topic will be data and market power, the infrastructure of platform industries, and economic network effects. Finally, we will discuss governance approaches such as the EU Data Protection Reform, privacy by design, professional ethics and antitrust regulation.
Learning objectives:
The seminar provides theoretical and empirical insights into the relationship between digitalization and society. It will enable the participants to take part in profound discussions about the preconditions and implications of digital media, business models as well as technical and legal regulations.
Didactic concept:
The participants will prepare the seminar topics by literature as provided and their own research, give a presentation and write an essay. Regular attendance and active participation in the seminar is expected. Participants are invited to attend lectures and conferences in other disciplines to widen their horizon.
