Kommentare/ Inhalte: In this course, the students will be introduced to OAE and carbonate chemistry measurements, through field and laboratory experiments. After a quick introductory session, a two-day field trip to Kiel at the GEOMAR will familiarise students with natural seawater sampling techniques and the importance of sample storage and handling. The students will get to use two devices for water samplings that are often used in larger mesocosms studies by the GEOMAR (link to mesocosms study in March 2024). Once the sampling procedures are complete, the first carbonate chemistry analyses (total alkalinity, dissolved inorganic carbon, pH…) will take place. After these important first analyses are performed, the freshly filtered seawater will be brought back to Universität Hamburg and used for further laboratory experiments. In lab-scale experiments, the students will conduct small OAE simulations through the dissolution of various alkaline minerals in groups. Various carbonate chemistry parameters will be measured throughout the experiments. Through total alkalinity, dissolved inorganic carbon and ion chromatography analyses, a carbon capture potential for each mineral can be estimated, and a general discussion of the suitability of each material for OAE will conclude the course.
