Seminar description:

Historical injustices, ranging from colonialism, slavery to genocide, have left lasting scars on communities worldwide but more so in the global south. In the past couple of years, political and legal discussions about reparations for past injustices have been on the rise globally. Due to its own colonial history, Germany provides a pertinent backdrop for academic discussions on reparations. This seminar delves into this crucial topic, offering participants a unique opportunity to explore the intersections of history, law, and social justice from critical perspectives such as Third World Approaches to International Law (TWAIL) and decolonial thought. The seminar will also critically examine the inadequacies of traditional international legal frameworks in addressing and rectifying historical wrongs while also providing insight into the complexities of seeking reparations within a global context. The seminar objectives are the encouragement of comprehensive and nuanced understandings of historical wrongs within the framework of international law and their interconnections to contemporary social justice matters; and fostering of critical thinking skills that challenge conventional legal norms.
