This course offers a comprehensive examination of international law's intersection with global politics, focusing on the role and impact of international courts and tribunals. Following the aftermath of World War II, the world witnessed a significant shift towards international cooperation, marked by the formation of numerous multilateral treaties and international organizations. Despite these developments, the contemporary international landscape is still plagued by military conflicts, challenging the efficacy of the existing international order.

Incorporating both legal and political science perspectives, the course begins with an introduction to key concepts and foundational elements of international law, including actors, treaties, and the nature of violations. Subsequently, it delves into various aspects of international law, covering topics such as trade, the law of the sea, human rights, armed conflicts, and criminal law. Each topic is examined through a blend of legal definitions and empirical examples from around the world. A unique feature of this course is a planned visit to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), a United Nations body located in Hamburg. This visit will provide students with a firsthand experience of an international legal institution in operation, enhancing their understanding of the course material.
