Update 12.02.24: Diese LV findet donnerstags statt, 16:00 - 18:00 Uhr, R 222.
What is food? While this question seems easy to answer at first, it becomes (very) complex when looking at specific situations or comparing different cultural contexts. Very often, what is food is negotiable. As the answer to the question is crucial for human survival, an understanding of ‘food’ and ‘eating’ touches upon all spheres of live: the economic as much as the political, the cultural or the social. Consequently, ‘food’ has been theorized in anthropology from very different angles. In the seminar, we will discuss a range of theoretical perspectives, from symbolic and structuralist interpretations, political economic approaches to phenomenological understandings. While food has been an important topic of anthropological inquiry for a long time, during the last 20 years the number of studies dedicated to food and eating has virtually exploded. Following the lead of influential food anthropologist Sydney W. Mintz, the seminar will concentrate on selected topics, especially the nexus between food and inequality/injustice (including racisms and colonialism), food and identity/memory, and food and the senses.
The seminar combines different types of texts (a monograph and articles) with additional forms of knowledge production. We will start with introductory overview articles and a number of case studies. Then the monograph “Black Food Geographies. Race, Self-Reliance, and Food Access in Washington, D.C.” (2019) by Ashanté M. Reese will be read together. Additionally, small exercises like brief (self) observations will add further layers of understanding. Participants should be willing to read approx. 30-50 pages per week and participate in individual and group exercises.
