Formal Requirements for Participation:
For ICSS students: prior attendance of "Introduction to the social sciences and climate communication" and "Introduction to social science methods" (or equivalent) For Journalism students: having attended "Modul 1 - Journalismus und digital vernetzte Gesellschaft" and "Modul 2 - Empirische Methoden für Forschung und Journalismus" in the first semester of the MA JKW (or equivalent) Other students (dependent on capacities): having attended a course on social science research, its approaches and methods, and a course on media studies or journalism

Kommentare/ Inhalte:
• Actors in climate communication (scientists, businesses, political actors, media, citizens)
• Fundamentals of climate communication and current trends
• Communicative strategies to delay/obstruct and how to counter them
• Research project: qualitative or quantitative analysis of media content or strategic communication by important actors

Lernziel:
Students will have learned about current patterns and dynamics in the global debate on climate change: How do scientists, journalists, businesses, civil society, and political actors interact and produce public communication about climate change? How do recipients of communication respond to messages? Why is the climate debate different in various media contexts and countries?

Vorgehen:
Seminar (2 SWS): The first part of the course is used to discuss fundamentals and current research in the field. Active participation is required (group discussions, presentations, etc.). In the second part, groups of students will work together on small research projects on climate communication (e.g. media reports, advertisements, political communication, NGO campaigns, etc.)

Literatur:
Will be made public 1 week prior to course start. Expect to be reading 2 research papers or book chapters per week.

Zusätzliche Hinweise zu Prüfungen:
Research report, group or individual, 6K words To be awarded a grade, students are expected to participate actively in class.
