The online lecture series will offers a detailed introduction to Remote Sensing (RS), touching upon the fundamental aspects of electromagnetic radiation and the interactions between the atmosphere and the land surface. It further explores RS systems, platforms, and instruments, along with introductory techniques for image data processing, analysis and practical applications. This foundational knowledge prepares students for hands-on exercises focused on RS applications in land monitoring domain.
Building on this, the practical labs will deepen the understanding of RS by focusing on observation and monitoring of land surface features, employing a variety of data products such as aerial photography, multispectral data, and outputs from both active and passive systems. It emphasizes the application of these concepts through hands-on exercises in open-source QGIS software, which is renowned for its robust capabilities in spatial analysis and data management. Students will also be introduced to cutting-edge cloud computing platforms, including Google Earth Engine, showcasing the latest in RS technology and data processing. These tools offer an expansive range of applied applications in remote sensing, from environmental monitoring to urban planning, demonstrating the practical utility and transformative potential of RS in addressing real-world challenges.

Lernziel:
The lecture is designed to impart a foundational understanding of remote sensing, covering its core principles, various sub-disciplines, and the broad spectrum of its applications. It aims to equip students with a solid theoretical framework of remote sensing, setting the stage for a comprehensive exploration of the field.
Complementing the lecture, the practical course aims to reinforce and expand upon the foundational knowledge acquired. It focuses on the hands-on application of remote sensing techniques and software, with a particular emphasis on developing skills that are directly relevant to professional settings. Through engaging in practical exercises, students will learn to proficiently navigate and utilize remote sensing software, thereby gaining valuable, job-ready expertise in the field. This dual approach ensures a well-rounded education in remote sensing, from theoretical underpinnings to practical, real-world applications.

Vorgehen:
material will be announced via STINE. For the practical course, which will be carried out as a block course (22.07. to 26.07.2024), participants should already have basic knowledge of quantitative methods (Statistics, GIS).

Zusätzliche Hinweise zu Prüfungen:
Assessment: The assessment of the students’ performance will be based on the written assignment.
