Kommentare/ Inhalte: London is often called the epitome of a "global city." In this excursion, we will engage critically with this appellation. We will explore the ways in which "the global city" has been shaped by imperial histories experienced differentially across racialized, classed, and gendered spatialities. The excursion will chart the long history of spatial modernity in London, starting from the mid-16th century and culminating in the present. In so doing, it will cover the spatial underpinnings and consequences of several momentous events that made London the "global city" that it is considered to be today, ranging from the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536 and the English Civil War in 1642-1651, through the Great Fire of London in 1666, the onset of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century and the era of Metropolitan Improvements in the 19th, to the Blitz of 1940-41, the post-World-War-II welfare state, the neoliberalization of the 1980s and the 1990s, and the austerity measures that have followed the financial crisis of the late 2000s. We will grasp in situ how urban space has been central to not only the different ways each of these momentous events was experienced but also how each was acted upon by those with a stake in London and in various parts of the world connected to this "global city." Theoretically and conceptually charged readings circulated before the excursion will help us situate London in a wider context of "global cities." During the excursion itself, we will visit sites in London as well as various other relevant institutions such as museums.
