Kommentare/ Inhalte: Taking contemporary perceptions of music, genre definition and canonisation as a starting point, this seminar considers the way in which contemporary culture and music interact. Using theories developed by Marx and Adorno, which have been continually refined during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, we will discuss the relationships between music, musicology and cultural theory, in terms of application and methodology. Individual topics that will be considered during the semester include: modernism and mass / popular culture; Marxist theories of culture; audience theory; gender and sexuality; canonisation, decolonisation and cancel culture; and music, musicology and politics. Examples will primarily be drawn from contemporary culture, music from the western classical canon and popular music traditions to illustrate each point, however, the historical contexts of some musical works will also be considered where necessary. The central aims of the course are to assess how the various areas of cultural theory are applied to music, to question the role of cultural theory in contemporary musicology, and to discuss how music is perceived and defined in contemporary culture. The main teaching language of this course is English, however term papers may be written in English or German. This seminar should be considered not only as an opportunity to learn about music in contemporary culture, but also as a chance to improve your English.
