This course offers an introduction to the main philosophical ideas and positions of the Buddhist tradition in classical India, starting from the teachings of the historical Buddha and up to the works of later thinkers, such as Nagarjuna and Vasubandhu, whose rich philosophy has had enormous influence not only within the Indian subcontinent, but also on the intellectual history of other regions, including China, Tibet, Korea, and Japan. The classes will provide a survey of Buddhist engagement with problems in metaphysics, epistemology, and ethics in ways that are accessible both to students with priorir knowledge in Western philosophy and to students whose background is in Indian or Buddhist studies. We will read select primary sources in English translation, including extracts of Buddhist scriptures and later treatises, as well as academic articles and book chapters. Some of the questions that we will discuss from a Buddhist point of view are: What is the nature of the self and what accounts for our personal identity over time? Can the reality of the external world be established? Is it possible to know anything with certainty? And how should one live?
Lernziel:
The course objective is to allow you, by the end of the semester, to:
1. Have good knowledge of important concepts, arguments, and positions in classical Buddhist philosophy. The course will offer South Asian perspectives on philosophical problems in epistemology, metaphysics, and ethics, which will allow you to make connections with similar issues in Western philosophy.
2. Become familiar with a variety of philosophical genres and methods from Classical India (including prose, sutras, commentaries, and philosophical debates) and their distinct style of doing philosophy, and learn to analyze and extract key arguments from Sanskrit philosophical texts in English/German translation.
3. Be able to accurately summarize the views of major thinkers, philosophical schools, and traditions covered in the course readings, explain their arguments, and identify the strengths and weaknesses of their positions. Upon completion of the course, you will be prepared to take more advanced classes in Buddhist and Indian philosophy.
