Kommentare/ Inhalte:
The worldwide spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus poses a significant crisis that is seriously threatening the health of the world’s population and it is accompanied by huge social and economic disruption. But not only the recent pandemic but also the acceleration of the climate crisis, the floods witnessed in parts of Germany or the increase in refugee movements across the globe challenge established ways of coordinating and organizing. Managing large scale crises is a huge challenge for organizations and effective crisis management is becoming a key capability.

Drawing on contemporary organization theory, this course aims to illuminate latest research on managing organizational change and coordinating in crises. Building on the extensive literature that explores how organizations change and manage unexpected events reliably, the course seeks to develop an understanding of how coordination in crises unfolds.

 

Vorgehen:
The seminar will be held bi-weekly. Per session, we discuss one or two core publications that are fundamental in the area of crisis management and crisis communication. The basis of these discussions is provided by guiding questions. At the end of the seminar, students should thus be familiar with key theories and concepts of crisis management. 

Zusätzliche Hinweise zu Prüfungen:
Students are expected to write a portfolio of three short essays (as group work).
 
1.      Summarize one paper: 1500 words and hand-in 2 days prior to class
2.      Respond to the discussion questions of one paper: 1000 words and hand-in 2 days prior to class
3.      Summarize one discussion in class: 1000 words and hand in 3 days after class
