This seminar offers an interdisciplinary PEP-perspective on individual, yet interdependent decision-making. That is, it is situated in between decision theory – the assessment of individuals’ independent choices – on the one hand and social choice theory – the analysis of decisions made collectively – on the other hand. We will hence be concerned with the choices made by individuals where these choices depend on, and in turn affect, other individuals.

This interaction is of interest to game theorists and moral philosophers alike. Throughout the course, we will thus assess the relationship between the two disciplines: game theory and ethics. Should we consider their conjoining a “mismarriage” (Roemer) or is it the only appropriate way to analyse the intricacies of the “game of life” (Binmore)? Are games mere “tales or fables” (Rubinstein), or should we dare to apply them to pressing questions such as justice, when even Rawls appealed to the language of games?

We will consider the role of (moral) norms in decision-making, at potential conflicts between actions prescribed by rationality and those prescribed by morality, at fallacies in the understanding of games and in the resolution of dilemmata. We will talk about fair play as well as about the making and bending of rules.

Lernziel:
The seminar builds on students’ prior knowledge of moral philosophy on the one hand and microeconomic theory on the other. It deepens their understanding of topics and issues at the intersection of game theory and ethics. In particular, it discusses the possibilities and limitations of applying the language of games to questions of morality.

Vorgehen:
The course takes place as a weekly pre-read seminar, requiring students' preparation prior to each class and active participation during the class. Specific requirement and assessments will be discussed in the first session.

Literatur:
A syllabus together as well as the literature therein will be provided via OLAT.
