Kommentare/ Inhalte: Public Economics is the study of the economics of the public sector. Accordingly, it deals with the role of the state as an economic actor from both normative and positive perspectives. This course provides an overview of various theoretical and empirical concepts in public ecponomics, including some insights from psychology and behavioral economics. We will try to understand when and why the public sector should intervene in the economy and how.
Vorgehen: The lecture is scheduled to be face-to-face. Slides and other materials will be posted regularly online. Outline of the course: 1 Introduction to Public Economics 2 General Equilibrium, Market Efficiency and Theorems of Welfare Economics 3 Market failures (Public Goods, Externalities and the Environment, Incomplete Information) 4 Efficiency, Equity and Public Choice 5 Taxation 6 Tax Incidence 7 Public Debt and Financial Crisis 8 The Welfare State (Social Security and Education) 9 The psychology of Poverty 10 Nudging as a public policy tool
