Kommentare/ Inhalte:
Political truth has always been contested in a democracy. The intensity of epistemic contestation of scientific knowledge in the context of COVID-19 and recent climate debates is novel, however, and the reasons are in part sociotechnical, economic and political. This course disentangles fake news, dis/misinformation and alternative facts and considers them against their opposites: news, information, truth. It will also deal with the far-right attack against the “mainstream media”, which resignifies and inverts this concern to undermine public trust of professional news and further political antagonism. We will examine the origins - why have these issues become so prevalent in the last decade? - various expressions and effects of dis/misinformation and assess the stakes of epistemic contestation in the public sphere.

Lernziel:
-   Understand and apply social scientific theories about misinformation
-   Design a research project that addresses key questions about misinformation
-   Critically examine research and public debates about dis/misinformation
-   Analyze and normatively assess causes, effects and possible remedies against misinformation
