Our behaviour is constantly shaped by a large range of implicit social norms, from norms on when and how to queue to how to greet an acquaintance and what to wear to a funeral. We are usually not explicitly aware of the social norms in place and do not often question them. They may seem arbitrary and insignificant. However, when we pay philosophical attention to social norms, we see that they raise interesting questions about the nature of social artefacts, the function of rules, and the origin of our obligations.
One part of the course will be about the nature of social norms. What are social norms exactly? How are they different from mere habits, conventions and moral norms?
Another part of the course is focused on the justification of social norms. Should we have such norms and comply with them, and if so, for what reason? Are we morally required to respect the social norms of our society? What should we do with bad norms?
Overall, the course will combine questions and analyses from different subdisciplines of philosophy to provide an in-depth and multifaceted reflection on the hidden norms we live by.
