There are very different ways in which human societies perceive, define, and respond to deviant behaviour across cultures and historical contexts. Through a critical anthropological lens, we will examine the cultural, social, and economic factors that shape the construction of crime, the construction of punishment systems, and the dynamics of policing practices. Through case studies, ethnographic accounts, and theoretical frameworks, we will analyse how cultural norms influence perceptions of crime, how communities navigate justice independently of and through formal institutions, and how these dynamics are embedded in classed, racialised and gendered power relations. The course includes perspectives on indigenous justice systems as well as the institutional context of modern statehood. In particular, we will critically examine the 'punitive turn' - the observation of an increase in state practices of criminalisation, more violent policing and harsher penal regimes in Western societies since the late 1970’s. By mobilising a transcultural perspective, we will explore what anthropology can contribute to understanding these dynamics.
Vorgehen:
In this course, which requires substantial close reading, students discuss important conceptual texts as well as ethnographic texts that examine specific regimes of crime, punishment, and policing from the perspective of legal anthropology in transcultural perspective.
